The district police superintendent, Mohammad Farid Uddin, gave a press conference on Akbar’s arrest on Monday (November 9). Akbar was arrested in the Dona border area of Kanaighat through some close friends of the police.

Several video clips of Akbar’s capture by the locals have gone viral on social media. In one of these videos, locals were tying Akbar’s hands and feet. At that time Akbar was saying, “I am not Bhagmu or brother, I am not Bhagmu.” When one of the Khasias asked him his name, he said, ‘I am Akbar.’ Then the locals started saying, “You are killing people for 10,000 rupees”, “You are killing Raihan.” Akbar was heard saying, “They didn’t kill me, they took me to hospital.” At that time, Akbar’s dress was very similar to that of the locals. He was wearing a necklace, a brown shirt, and black pants. He looked like a local with a bushy beard. Later, the locals tied him up and carried him through hills and swamps on foot. At that time, the locals gave him a bottle of water and those carrying it were overheard advising him not to kill Akbar. In another video, Akbar is heard saying: ‘I am not a murderer, I did not kill. I didn’t kill on purpose. I didn’t kill him alone, five or six people killed him. They took me to the hospital. He died there. ‘

In another video, Akbar is seen standing with his hands tied behind his back, pleading with the locals: “Tell me not to kill me, not to kill my brother.” Then the locals start saying, ‘Don’t sit down, I won’t kill you.’ We will not kill your Lakhan. Raihan Ahmed, a resident of Akhalia Niharipara in Sylhet, was detained at the Bandarbazar outpost on the night of 10 October and tortured. He died the next day, October 11. His wife Tahmina Akhter Tani filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station under the Death (Prevention) Act. On 12 October, four people, including SI Akbar Hossain in charge of the outpost, were suspended and three others were removed. It was missing from the next day.
The sacked policemen are Bandarbazar outpost officers Harunur Rashid, Touhid Mia and Titu Chandra Das. The retired police personnel are Deputy Assistant Inspector (ASI) Ashek Elahi, ASI Qutb Ali and Officer Sajib Hossain. Among them are ASI Ashek Elahi, Constable Harunur Rashid and Titu Chandra Das.
