In Noakhali, clashes and beatings occurred after police obstructed a black flag procession in front of the Prime Minister’s Office to demand justice for a series of rapes and oppressions across the country, including the torture of naked women.
Six leaders and activists from the student union were injured in the incident, said Sakhawat Fahad, president of the organization’s branch of Dhaka University.
He told Jugantar: “Six of our leaders and activists were injured in the beating by the police. They were sent to the hospital.
The injured are Asmani Asha, Secretary for Education and Research of the Jagannath University Parliament, Mahmuda Dipa, Secretary of the Lalbagh Police Station Office and Sajjad Hossain, Organization Secretary of the Mohammadpur Police Station. The identities of the others are not yet known.
As part of the pre-announced program, student union leaders and workers gathered in front of the National Museum in Shahbag around 12 noon on Tuesday and began protesting under the slogan ‘Students-People Against Rape and Oppression.’
Leaders and activists from various progressive organizations, writers, poets, artists, online activists and women’s rights activists also joined.
At around 1:15 pm, they marched from the Shahbagh crossing to the TSC area of Dhaka University with a black flag procession to the Prime Minister’s Office, but were stopped by the police at the Intercontinental Hotel crossing.
The protesters clashed with the police at the time. Later, when the police began to beat them, several leaders and activists of the student union were injured.
After staying there for about half an hour, the procession returned to the TSC area through Shahbag and took up position in front of the Raju sculpture.
On September 2, around 9 p.m., local Badal and his associates entered the housewife’s home in the Khalpar area of the Eklashpur Union District 9 of Begumganj Upazila and tied her husband in the adjoining room. Then they tried to rape the housewife.
When the housewife intervened, they stripped naked, brutally beat her and recorded videos on their mobile phones. It was spread on the Internet. This incident caused a commotion throughout the country.
The victim filed a case under the Child and Women Abuse Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act on Sunday night. By mentioning the names of 9 people there, 7-8 anonymous people were charged.
Additionally, a girlfriend was gang-raped on September 25 while out walking with her husband at MC College. Chhatra League leaders and activists forcibly took her husband’s housewife and raped her in the bedroom around 8:30 pm. At that time, her husband was tied up in front of the university.
The victim’s husband filed a case at the Shahparan Police Station. Three other unidentified leaders and activists of the Chhatra League were charged in the case. So far, six people, including six defendants in the case, have been detained.
