Thirteen passengers, including the driver, were rescued alive after a speedboat sank from Koralia in Rangabali upazila from Patuakhali to Panpatti, but five people are still missing. Several teams from the police and the Coast Guard are conducting operations to rescue the missing persons. Divers from the fire service come from Patuakhali to participate in the rescue operation. However, the campaign is hampered due to unfavorable weather.
The accident occurred along the middle of the Agunmukha River on Thursday night.
The missing passengers are the Rangabali police officer. Mahibullah (45), inspector of the Krishi Bank Rangabali Baherchar branch. Mostafizur Rahman (35), Humayun Kabir Hossain (28), Sramik Hasan (35) and Imran (34), a loan officer from the Khalgora branch of an NGO.
It was learned that a speedboat owned by Ahmed Enterprise with 16 passengers left the Koralia launch ghat of Rangabali upazila around 5 pm towards the Panpatti end of Galachipa upazila. The boat with 16 people sank in the middle of the fire.
An hour and a half later, two speedboats were able to rescue 13 passengers, including the driver. Five people are still missing. But the rescue operation continues for them, the Upazila administration said. No one was rescued at the time of this writing.
Basir, a trader at the Coralia launch dock, said the speedboat did not reach the other side even after an hour. The owner of the speedboat started the rescue operation an hour and a half later.
Delwar Hossain, manager of the Rangabali Baherchar Krishi Bank branch, who was rescued, said the front deck of the speedboat exploded due to strong waves.
The rescued passengers said we repeatedly asked the driver to turn the speedboat around and take it to the dock. But he did not take our words seriously.
The rescued passenger Alamin said most of the speedboat’s passengers were employees. Today we were going home for a two-day vacation after office work. It happened on the way. The disappeared seem not to return home alive.
Member Abdul Razzak said there are no fishing boats on the river for the blockade to be presented immediately. There have been several such incidents before. However, no casualties were reported when the fishing boat approached.
The additional superintendent of police (Kalapara and Rangabali Circle), Mohammad Ali, said that a police officer working at the Rangabali police station was supposed to go to his house in his holiday village today and many people saw him on the boat. His mobile phone has also been found turned off since the incident. Now I can’t be sure if it’s missing.
Note that the weather was hostile from Thursday morning. The warning sign No. 2 was in force at the river port and no. 3 in the seaport. River port official Khwaja Sadiqur Rahman said legal action will be taken against those responsible for how the boat operated without a lifejacket.
