Police arrested a street vendor for allegedly raping a 39-year-old widow at a house in the South Gamchakhali village of Hatiyar Charking Union in Noakhali. The arrested street vendor is Sribas Dev Nath (40), son of Sunil Dev Nath from the Fajram Majhi area of the 9th district of Nalchira Union in upazila.
The incident took place at noon on Thursday (October 29) in the village of Gamchakhali in the 9th district of Charking Union in upazila. The victim filed a case against the defendant that same night.
Hatia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Kanchan Kanti Das confirmed the incident and said police arrested him in Dakshin Gamchakhali village of upazila around 9 p.m. Thursday after receiving information from locals.
He further said that the arrested street vendors used to sell walnuts in different towns of the upazila by bicycle. On Thursday afternoon he went by ferry to the village of South Gamchakhali. At that time the widow’s mother was in the market next door to buy medicine. The widow was cooking alone in the kitchen. The peddler found the widow alone and raped her. At one point, the people of the house came to the cry of the widow and arrested the rapist and handed him over to the police.
