Passenger women are in dire straits as there are not enough toilets at Paturia Ghat

Manikganj: The authorities have stopped the ferry service at Paturia Ghat to avoid accidents due to increased fog in the middle of Padma. Hundreds of vehicles wait at the ghat point.

Meanwhile, due to the lack of a proper drainage system at the ghat point, female passengers trapped in vehicles are at increased risk. However, it must be done at the risk of responding to the call of nature, said several passengers who were waiting to cross the channel.

Ferry service to Paturia was suspended as of 10:15 pm on Tuesday (December 6).

On Wednesday (December 9) morning, several female passengers stranded at Paturia Ghat Point waiting to cross the waterway said that the ferry service would stop from time to time due to fog. However, there is a mobile drainage system for stranded passengers at the pier, but it cannot be used. Because in the ferry ghats and launch ghats, the serial toilets of the passengers are kept in the paved toilets made by the district administration. Also, there is a bamboo fence toilet in the ghat area, but it is sloped. Passengers often suffer because there is not enough water.

Afia, a passenger from Paribahan bound for Khulna, told banglanews that she left Dhaka and arrived at Paturia Ghat around 10:30 pm on Tuesday (December 8). Since then I’ve been stuck waiting to cross the channel. Food is not allowed in the ghat hotels. That is why I ate dry food. But the drainage system of the ghat is so bad that it cannot be put into words. Two to one cannot be used. Nobody has a hand in nature. It is normal for ferry services to be closed in winter due to fog. That is why the authorities must have adequate mobile toilets in the ghat area.

Another passenger from the transport, Nilufa, said that the drainage system needed to be more secure due to fog on one side and movement of people on the other.

He said that although there were two mobile toilets with bamboo fences propped up on the side of the road in the ghat area, they did not have an adequate water supply. Our demand from the authorities is to have a healthy and good drainage here.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Aricha Sector Director General Zillur Rahman told banglanews that the ferry service has been suspended to avoid accidents due to fog in the middle Padma. Four ferries are anchored in the middle of the river while the signal lights for the ferries in the middle of the river have been dimmed.

Regarding the demand for female passengers, DGM Zillur further said that there are several mobile drainage facilities at the Paturia Ghat point. Basically, it’s not my department’s responsibility. However, as the passengers have demanded, we will try to install some more drainage system here in due course.

DGM Zillur also said that more than a hundred vehicles are waiting at the Paturia Ghat point while the ferry service is closed.
