Judge KM Imrul Kayesh of Dhaka Special Court No. 1 sentenced the couple to 20 years and seven years in rigorous prison in two sections for possession of illegal weapons and ammunition.

“They are the so-called politicians. They are busy with their own receipts. They were not only committed to the well-being of the country and the people, but they were a grave danger to the country. They placed a foreign pistol, two magazines, 20 rounds of ammunition under the mattress of his bed for any misuse. These illegal weapons and ammunition were under his control, possession and knowledge.

Papia, general secretary of the Narsingdi District Women’s Youth League, and her husband Sumon were arrested at Dhaka’s Shahjalal Airport on February 22.

At the time, they were seized seven passports, two lakh 12,260 rupees, 25,700 rupees counterfeit banknotes, 11,461 dollars, some Sri Lankan and Indian coins, and two debit cards.

Shamima Nur Papia, an expelled Juba Mahila League leader, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in a gun law case on Monday, is being taken to jail by the Dhaka Metropolitan Court of Judges for Sessions after the verdict was announced.

Later, they raided a flat at Papier’s Farmgate and recovered a foreign pistol, two clips, 20 rounds, five bottles of foreign liquor, Tk 58.41 lakh, and credit and debit cards from various banks.

According to the RAB, at the time, Papia used to pay millions of rupees for the hotel by renting the Westin hotel in Gulshan and engaging in “antisocial activities.”

Following the arrest, RAB filed two cases against Papia and her husband at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station under the Guns and Narcotics Act.

The court filed charges against Papia and her husband on August 23 in a weapons case. His verdict came Monday, two and a half months after the hearing began.

The judge said that the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt the accusations against the defendants under sections 19 (a) and 19 (f) of the Gun Law.

However, since the defendant Papia was a woman, this law did not impose the maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Her husband has received the same punishment.

Papia will have to serve a total of 20 years as the two sections will go into effect simultaneously.

Of the four lawsuits filed against the couple so far, the first was on the Gun Law.
