Pakistani court bans the so-called ‘virginity test’ for raped women Human rights activists have welcomed this decision.
The BBC reported Wednesday that Lahore High Court Judge Ayesha Malik had said such evidence was inhumane. This evidence has no forensic value. The order will stop the ‘two-finger test’ in Punjab province.
Human rights activists in Punjab province made two appeals for the test. The court then issued the order. Human rights activists have long demanded the cancellation of the “virginity test.” This “two finger test” is done as part of the rape health exam. Human rights activists say there is no scientific basis for such evidence.
Steps will be taken to stop the ‘virginity test’ in other provinces of Pakistan such as Punjab. Another such application is pending in the Sindh High Court.
Samir Khosa, a lawyer representing the petitioners in Lahore, told the BBC that the ‘virginity test’ had no forensic value in cases of sexual violence. He hoped that, following the order of the Lahore High Court, the relevant authorities would take action and stop the “virginity test” entirely.
The World Health Organization says the two-finger test has no scientific basis. This is a violation of human rights.
