The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) changed the word ‘Pak / Pakistan’ written on more than 10,000 pillars on the Bangladesh-India border to ‘BD / Bangladesh’. The force’s director of operations, Lt. Col. Faizur Rahman, said this at a press conference at the BGB headquarters on Wednesday.
It said that several contraband and drugs worth Tk 382.95 million were seized during the six months from February to September. During the operation 2,063 smugglers and 344 Bangladeshi citizens and 98 Indian citizens were arrested for crossing the border illegally and legal action has been taken.
Faizur Rahman said there were 10,240 pillars on the border, which is much earlier. These were written “Pak” or “Pakistan”. BGB members who were on duty at the border asked us to consider converting them to ‘BD’ or ‘Bangladesh’. Subsequently, the DG (Director General) decided to change them. The members of BGB have put this writing on all the pillars of the border with cement and sand around the neck.
Faizur Rahman said the BGB has adopted a plan to build 615 km of border roads in the mountainous border areas. Currently 316 km of road are being built. In addition, 63 modern composite BPs have been approved for construction. The BGB has created jobs by distributing vans, sewing machines, livestock, tea stands to the unemployed and defenseless on the other side of the border through the ‘Illuminated Border Project’. In addition, relief materials have been distributed to some 120,000 destitute, defenseless and homeless families in 26 border districts with the help of various aid agencies under the leadership of BGB.
Responding to journalists’ question, the director said that not only BGB but any police force does not want shootings. Our only objective is to arrest the culprit. At that time many criminals attacked us, fired shots, then in self-defense and in defense of government property.
When asked how many Bangladeshis were killed in the BSF shooting, he said: “You must have the number. Recently, a meeting was held at the BGB-BSF Director General level. The head of BSF has been informed about this. There has been no such incident since then, however our correspondent for Jugantar reported that three people were killed in Chapainawabganj on Tuesday.
According to other law enforcement agencies, drugs are entering through the border, if the BGB had been more active, the matter could have stopped. In this regard, he said, it is the personal opinion of the person who said it, not the statement from the police headquarters. We often share information or opinions through the ministry or directly with the police headquarters. If there are any suggestions at the central level, the matter should be discussed. BGB members are present 24 hours a day in the country’s 4,428 km of border. We are seizing all the drugs that pass through the border.
Regarding the allegations of participation by BGB members in drug trafficking, the director said that in addition to state law, the BGB has its own laws. We respect that law and fulfill our responsibilities. Furthermore, the BGB has been reformed many times. It can be said that the involvement of BGB with drugs on the border is nil.
When asked about the presence of the Myanmar army on the Rakhine border, the BGB official said: “Central officials need to know better how much BGB members should be present at the border.” We have as many BGB members as we need to protect our borders. Our people on the border are alert. The BGB workforce has increased and we are doing everything we can to fulfill our responsibilities.
