The government agreed to buy 30 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine invented by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca in the UK. The vaccine will be supplied to the government by the country’s pharmaceutical company Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited, brought in from the Seram Institute of India. This vaccine will be administered to one and a half million people in two doses. The vaccine will arrive in Bangladesh shortly after it is approved by the Oxford World Health Organization.
The information was given at the signing ceremony of a tripartite memorandum of understanding in the conference room of the Ministry of Health on Thursday. The MoU has been signed on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh between the Ministry of Health, Beximco Pharma and the Serum Institute of India.
The official price of the vaccine will be five to six US dollars per dose.
Apart from this, Beximco will also vaccinate in the private market under its own management. However, the price of the vaccine on the market has not yet been decided.
Bangladesh has already been included in the Covex Group of the World Health Organization for the coronavirus vaccine. This is the first time that the government has signed an agreement to buy a vaccine from a private company. The Oxford vaccine will reach people through the Department of Health’s National Immunization Program.
However, the first opportunity will be given to medical personnel, members of the law enforcement agencies and journalists who are working from the front lines to deal with Corona.
The Oxford vaccine is now in the final stages of experimental application, the contract signing ceremony said. It can be found this year. Although it is not available this year, it is likely to be available in January.
The Seram Institute of India, an Indian institution, has been involved in the testing and production of this possible vaccine. The Serum Institute has partnership agreements with Oxford and AstraZeneca to produce and supply these vaccines to different countries around the world. Beximco Pharmaceuticals signed an agreement with the Seram Institute last August to import vaccines from India and supply them to Bangladesh.
The additional secretary of the Department of Health signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase the Oxford vaccine. Mostafa Kamal, Sandeep Mule for the Seram Institute and Rabbur Reza for Beximco.
Minister of Health Zahid Malek, Managing Director of Beximco Pharma Nazmul Hasan Papon, High Commissioner of India Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy, Secretary of Health Services Md. Abdul Mannan, Secretary of the Department of Health Education. Ali Noor and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion, the Health Minister said that the country’s people have long been waiting for the importation of the corona vaccine. As a result of this agreement, that wait is coming to an end. In this case, Beximco Pharma has played an important role. Beximco has built a government bridge with the Seram Institute of India. If the Seram Institute vaccinates Beximco Pharma, they will hand it over to the government. The only thing that awaits is the approval of the World Health Organization. Once approved, it will not be too late to bring the vaccine.
The minister said that the government has decided to import 30 million doses of vaccine in the first batch. This vaccine will be administered in two doses to one and a half million people. 5 million people will be given each month. The second dose will be given 28 days after the first dose is given to a person.
Responding to a question from journalists, the Health Minister added: “Not only Oxford, but also other vaccines are under scrutiny.” Also, we will get the vaccine through Covex.
Nazmul Hasan Papon, Managing Director of Beximco Pharma, said: “At first we thought that Corona would be gone in two to three months. But now I see that it is not clear when it will end. Now we depend more on vaccines. In our country, we want vaccines first, then we want safe vaccines. With all that in mind, we contacted Serum for the Oxford-Astrageneca Ticker. We believe that this vaccine will be more effective than the number of vaccines that are thought to be good so far.
India’s new High Commissioner for Bangladesh, Vikram Kumar Doraiswamy, said: “Bangladesh is a good friend of India. In this case, Bangladesh is entering into an agreement to collect vaccines through a partnership with the Seram Institute of India. I am proud of this. ‘
