Amid anti-rape protests across the country, four young men have been accused of gang-raping an NGO worker (25) in Fakirhat, Bagerhat. The woman was tortured in a rented house in the Lokpur union’s Zaria Maitkumra village in Fakirhat upazila on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, after receiving the news, the police pursued and arrested a rapist named Mamun Sheikh (30) that night, but three others escaped. According to the police, the four attackers were truck drivers, construction workers and agricultural workers. An operation is underway to catch them.
The victim filed a case at the Fakirhat police station on Sunday accusing Mamun and four other people. His medical examination was completed at Bagerhat Sadar Hospital in the afternoon.
The other three defendants are Firoz Nikari, 29, son of Siraj Nikari from Chhota Khajura village in Fakirhat upazila, Raju, 25, and Musa, 29, from the same village.
In the afternoon, Jaria went to the village of Maitkumra and saw the lock hanging in the room of the house where the woman lives. Part of the rice can on the verandah is empty.
The NGO worker rents a room in a three-room house with brick masonry and tin canopy on the side of the road and her other colleague (male) in the next room.
After obtaining the identity of a journalist, several men and women from the area gathered there. They said that the victim NGO worker is a good person. They demanded exemplary punishment for the beasts that brutally tortured him.
The owner of the house, Vishnu Pad Kund, said that the NGO worker had been renting a room in his house for about a year and a half. Although she was married about two months ago, the woman lives here alone for her work. When they heard screams at night, they went and saw some young men. When they arrived, the young men started running and running.
Neighboring school teacher Nikhil Kumar Ghosh said that, like others, he came running after hearing screams in the middle of the night. He came and saw that the people had gathered in that house. By then, the police had arrested a man named Mamun Sheikh. After arriving there, he heard the NGO worker’s description of the brutal torture.
The teacher demanded exemplary punishment for those who tortured the woman.
Speaking with Lily Begum and Shyamal Pal from a nearby house and a few others, they also demanded punishment for the perpetrators.
Fakirhat Upazila Parishad Chairman Swapan Kumar Das said: “After hearing the news on Saturday night, I called the police and asked them to take legal action immediately.”
The tortured woman mentioned in the case brief that when she woke up to a loud noise, the defendant forcibly entered her room as soon as she left the gallery room. The tenant in the next room (Biswajit) demanded a lakh rupee with a knife to his throat saying that he had done bad things to his colleague. Then they opened the door to the next room and went inside, hit the colleague on the head with a flashlight and beat him. At that moment, the defendant took him to the colleague’s room and made a video on his mobile phone. He was subsequently forcibly raped in turn. At that time, the defendants recorded the torture scene on their mobile phones. At one point, I screamed loudly. On their way, the defendants took 17,000 rupees in a toiletry bag, (gold) earrings and a necklace.
Bagerhat Police Superintendent Pankaj Chandra Roy said that a group of four young men entered the NGO worker’s room and tried to blackmail her first. At one point, the woman was forcibly raped.
He added that after receiving the news in the evening, patrol police detained a man named Mamun Sheikh from the area and seized the video on his cell phone.
The arrested defendant is being questioned at the police station, he said, adding that efforts are being made to catch the other defendant.
Said the Civil Surgeon of Bagerhat. KM Humayun Kabir said the medical examination of the three hospital doctors was completed in the afternoon. Samples have been collected. The report will be delivered within a day or two after the completion of the exam.
