Dhaka Speedy Trial Court-1 Magistrate Abu Zafar. Kamruzzaman on Tuesday dismissed the defendants’ request for release and bail and brought charges against all of them.

He said that the case would be heard uninterrupted from September 20 to October 1 every business day.

Abrar, a resident student from BUET’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall and a sophomore from the Department of Electrical Engineering, was tortured to death in the room of a BCL leader on the night of October 8.

The next day, Abrar’s father filed a lawsuit against 19 students at the Chawkbazar Police Station. During the investigation, the police arrested a total of 21 people, including 17 from Ejahar.

After a five-week investigation, Detective Inspector Wahiduzzaman filed a charge sheet at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court on November 13, charging 25 people.

After accepting the charge sheet, the court issued arrest warrants for the four fleeing defendants on November 18. One of them later surrendered to court.

The 22 defendants in the case are Mehedi Hasan Russell, the expelled BUET Chhatra League secretary general Muhtasim Fouad, the expelled vice president Mehedi Hasan Robin, the ousted organizing secretary Anik Sarkar, the ousted information and research secretary, Meftahul Islam Zion, the expelled sports secretary Editor Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, expelled members Muntasir Al Jemi, Mozahidur Rahman, Khandaker Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir, Istiaq Hasan Munna, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Moniruzzaman Monir and Akash Hossain branch secretary BUET Mohammad, Majedur Rahman, Shamim Billah and Moaz Abu Horaira, ASM Nazmus Sadat, SM Mahmud Setu, the six defendants outside the statement are Istiaq Ahmed Munna, secretary of texts and publications of the BUET Chhatra League, Amit Saha, undersecretary of legal affairs, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul. Eight of the detainees have made confessional statements in court.

On March 15, the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior transferred the case to the Rapid Court of First Instance in Dhaka.

The trial court is required to resolve any case within 90 business days. If the matter is not resolved within that time, the court can take another 45 days.
