Kamala Harris, the first black woman and vice president in US history, resigned from the Senate on Monday (January 16) local time. He resigned two days before being sworn in as vice president on January 20.

“It was an honor to serve as your senator,” he wrote in a letter to the citizens of California after his resignation.

“This is not the end of the story,” he wrote in a San Francisco Chronicle sub-editorial. Today I resign from the Senate in preparation to take the oath.

With Harris’ resignation, Democratic Senator Chuck Sumer will be the Senate Majority Leader. As a result, Democrats will regain control of the Senate for another six years.

Kamala further wrote: “I am resigning from the United States Senate. But it’s not the end, it’s the beginning. ‘

Alex Padilla, California Secretary of State, replaces Harris in the Senate. He is the first senator of Latino descent from California.

Harris was elected first senator in 2016 after Donald Trump came to power. Kamala Harris will be sworn in Wednesday by the country’s Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomeyer.
