A coalition of most of the country’s opposition parties has been formed to demand the resignation of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and the overthrow of his government. The profile of the alliance was finalized through talks on Sunday. The coalition has been dubbed the “Pakistan Democratic Movement”.

In this alliance, just as Nawaz Sharif’s (Nawaz) Pakistan Muslim League is present, so is the Pakistan People’s Party. However, Nawaz Sharif was not present at Sunday’s meeting because he was in London for treatment. He gave a speech by videoconference. His daughter Maryam Nawaz was present at the meeting on behalf of the Muslim League. Also present was Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. A representative from JUIF was also present at the meeting.

According to the meeting’s decision, the opposition parties will organize a movement against the Tehreek-e-Insaf government across Pakistan in a staggered fashion starting next October. The second phase of the movement will be in December. It has been decided to organize a large march to Islamabad from across the country in January 2021 to make the demand come true.

Opposition parties have stated that Imran Khan won the elections by fraud and was assisted by the Pakistani army. Therefore, the influence of the army will not continue in the politics of Pakistan. A new liability law must be introduced. Pakistan’s electoral system must also be reformed to maintain transparency and fairness.

In a video message, Nawaz Sharif said: “Our fight is not against Imran Khan. Our fight is against those who put Imran Khan in power. Those who manipulated the election (2016) to bring an incompetent like him to power. and thus destroy the country.

Nawaz said: ‘A democratically elected government will rule the country, that arrangement must be made. They will fix the economy of the country. They will also fix foreign policy. Imran is not eligible for the post of prime minister. He has been appointed Prime Minister by the army and the country is heading towards destruction. So first we want to save the country from the clutches of the army.
