Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said that his forces will win the Nagorno-Karabakh war. The chances of engagement in this war are also diminishing. In an interview with the BBC, he said that he does not see any chance of making peace with the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan.
Shortly after the interview, he announced that his country’s forces had captured Shusha, the second largest city in Nagorno-Karabakh. But the Armenian government has denied the allegations, saying the fighting continues. This city is known to Armenians as Shushi.
According to a BBC correspondent, the capture of the strategically important city of Nagorno-Karabakh would be a great victory for Azerbaijan in the war.
The city of Shushi is built on a hill near Stepanakart, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh. The road that runs through it is connected to Armenia. Experts believe that if the city is captured, it will be easier to attack the capital, Stepanakart.
About a month and a half ago, war broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed territory. There have been previous clashes between the two countries over its control. The Six Years’ War ended in 1994, but no peace agreement was ever signed. Although the area is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, it is controlled by ethnic Armenians in support of the Armenian government.
