Trade Minister Tipu Munshi launched the online onion sales program entitled ‘Comfort At Home Onion’ on Sunday at a virtual event.
Initially, residents of the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chittagong will be able to purchase affordable TCB onions through eight online stores.
However, a buyer can order a maximum of 3 kg of onion once a week, with a shipping price of Rs 30 per order.
As such, the cost of the buyer to get to the house of three kg of onion will be 138 rupees.
Of these, five e-commerce sites called Chaldal, Swapna, Sindabad, Sabzibazar and Jachai will be ordered online starting Sunday afternoon.
The next day, bidsol and ekshop and one more can be added.
The onion market in the country has become uncontrollable like last year, as India stopped exporting. The price of onion has doubled per kg. As of last Friday, Indian onions are selling for Rs 60 to Rs 70 and domestic onions between countries at Rs 60 retail.
TCB has been selling onions at 30 Tk per kg on the open market since September 13 to curb the increase in onion prices. There, a buyer can buy a maximum of 2 kg of onions. Buyers have to stand on the road and wait a long time as there is a crowd buying TCB onions.
In such a context, the government has taken up this program to put onions online for middle class buyers. At first, shoppers will be able to purchase onions through some limited and select online stores.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Commerce said: “TCB can sell onions through 300 to 500 trucks, but preparations have been made to sell onions online via e-taxis to supply onions at affordable prices on a large scale.
“At the beginning there may be some problems but in the next few days it will be easier. Little by little it will be done on a larger scale. “
Jahangir Alam Shovon, general manager of e-Cab, said that five companies would start selling onions from Sunday afternoon, which is limited to Dhaka and Chittagong. Currently, a maximum of 3 kg of onion is given in an order, but in the future it will be increased to 5 kg.
He said that a buyer can place an order once a week, verified with a mobile phone number and address, so that the same buyer can not place an order more than once.
The TCB concession is being granted considering the warehouse, delivery capacity, e-commerce website and e-booth recommendations.
At the moment, each e-commerce distribution company will be able to collect half a ton of onions from TCB every three days.
The initial goal is to sell 10,000 tons of onions online, which could increase.
To properly complete the entire process, the Ministry of Commerce, TCB and E-CAB have formulated a uniform set of rules or SOPs, which each institution will be required to comply with.
