India has stopped exporting onions to prevent prices from rising due to deficits from heavy rains and floods. As a result, Indian onions cannot be imported from Tuesday.
Sources with the Healy and Bhomra Customs Revenue Department said this on Monday.

According to sources from importers, just like last year, there is a shortage of onions in several states of India due to heavy rains and floods. As a result, prices in the Indian market have increased. Onion imports to Bangladesh have been verbally stopped so that prices do not rise too high. However, India has yet to make an official announcement.
It is known that no onion will be exported against LCs that are open for onion import and the bidding process has been completed.
Customs officials at the land ports of Healy and Bhomra said Monday that no onions had arrived from India all day. No more imports from tomorrow.
The news that India has stopped onion exports has pushed up prices in the country’s market. In Karwan Bazaar, the price of onions has risen from Tk 10 to 15 per kg. Domestic onions are sold on the market for Rs 60-75 and imported onions are for Rs 55-60.
In this regard, Sumon Mia, an onion seller in Karwan Bazar, said that India has stopped exporting onions. That is why people stumble and buy. As a result, it has increased from 10 to 15 rupees per kg. There is no doubt that prices will go up tomorrow.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, it is being investigated whether India has actually stopped onion exports.
Although the import of Indian onions has been halted, there are alternative arrangements, the trade minister said. He said the onions were imported from several countries last year. The onions will be imported again from those countries.
The preparations have already been completed.
He also said that a letter was sent to the National Revenue Board (NBRK) requesting the removal of the 5 percent tariff on onion imports.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, it was decided to import one lakh of onions from Turkey urgently. Furthermore, onion import activities are also starting from Myanmar.
A meeting was scheduled for today in India on onion exports and prices, importers said.
Harun Ur Rashid Harun, Chairman of the Healy Land Port Import and Export Group, said on Monday that no truck carrying onions from India had entered the Healy Port. However, India has yet to issue a letter on whether to stop onion exports.
Onion prices have risen by Rs 30-35 per kg in the Indian market recently.
Therefore, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has started selling onions nationwide at a price of Tk 30 to buyers from Sunday.
In September last year, India abruptly announced the suspension of onion exports. Then the price of this product rises in the market of the country. The price rose to a record 300 rupees.
The government then imported onions by land, sea and air from Myanmar, China, Egypt and Pakistan as an alternative to India.
