Buyers are flocking to the Amtali fish markets in Barguna to buy hilsa as it is prohibited to catch and sell hilsa for the next 22 days to protect the hilsa mother.
It is known that the capture of hilsa in the sea and rivers has been prohibited for 22 days from October 14 to November 4. During this period, due to the government’s decision to stop the acquisition, transportation, marketing and storage of hilsa, buyers are eager to buy hilsa at the Amtali fish markets.
On the spot, Tuesday evening, after the Amtali municipality office, the new market intersection and Bau Bazar fish market were visited, a large crowd of men and women at each market. Hundreds of buyers flock to all markets to buy hilsa. Vendors sell fish of different sizes in containers using microphones with lights on.
Speaking with teacher Ensani Al Mamun, a resident of district 7 of the municipality, who came to buy hilsa at the fish market at the new crossroads. He said that due to the blockade, the capture and sale of hilsa will stop for 22 days, so I go to the market to see if I can buy hilsa at a lower price.
Nurjahan Begum, a housewife who came to buy hilsa in Bau Bazar, said: “I have heard that the sale of hilsa fish will stop from tomorrow due to the blockade.” So I come to buy fish. I bought 5 fish of different sizes for 1600 rupees.
Sellers Khalilur Rahman, Rubel Sharif and several other buyers said that the price of hilsa fish was relatively low due to the lockdown. The oversized hilsa sells for Rs. 1000 to Rs. 600 per kg, the medium-size hilsa at Rs. 600 to Rs. 500 and the small hilsa at Rs. 300 to Rs. 350 per kg. Sales are also much higher than on other days.
Mahbubur Rahman Himu Gazi, president of the Amtali New Bazar Fish Market Cooperative Fisheries Society, said police had been deployed to maintain law and order while the fish market was packed. He added that the hilsa fish sale will continue until 12 noon tonight.
