Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has started cleaning the Panthapath box culvert a day after it was assigned responsibility for drainage in the metropolis of Dhaka.
Trash was removed from Panthakunj adjacent to the Kawran Bazar roundabout on Saturday. On the first day, 64 tons of trash was removed from five manholes of the Panthapath box culvert.
The Panthapath box culvert that runs from Hatirjheel to Russell Square is known to have at least 24 faces. The entire sewer in the box will be cleaned step by step.
It was seen at the scene that around 9 am, DSCC workers were cleaning the manhole cover adjacent to Panthakunj park. Modern equipment is also used to facilitate cleaning activities. After a long time, the people of the area began to gather to clean it up.
ABCC Amin Ullah Nuri, Executive Director of DSCC, Air Commodore Badrul Amin, Director of Waste Management, Nazrul Islam Babla, Councilor of District No. 18 and Asaduzzaman Asad, Councilor for District No. 21 inspected activities in the Panth Kunj area at noon.
Responding to a question from journalists, Amin Ullah Nuri said that canals, drainage gutters and box culverts have been the subject of special interest to the DSCC. We are trying to keep the drainage channels (canals, drains and sewers) clean and fluid before the next monsoon. Hopefully, this effort will be very successful. I think I’ll be able to clean the sewers and canals in March.
In this regard, Badrul Amin said, DSCC has an important responsibility. Under the mayor’s leadership, we have started cleanup activities. It is hoped that, by performing these activities correctly, the sewers, drains, and canals in the DSCC area will be adequate for drainage.
According to DSCC officials, 84 tonnes of waste was removed from five drainage pits in the Panthapath box culvert on the first day. The depth of the box culvert within the Panthakunj Park is of two types. Its depth is 11 feet and 20 to 22 feet. In this case, interested persons are working to find out the exact size through the cooperation of the technical committee.
They said that it is not necessary to just clean the sewer (drainage pit). Cleaning staff and machines must be inserted inside. The crane must be inserted. The water flow should be increased. Garbage must be collected with the machine. The connection faces inside the culvert are closed. The faces must be cleaned. The first 200 meters will be cleared. The other part will be cleaned later.
On the first day, about 64 tons of waste was removed from five drainage pits from the Panthapath Box sewer in six trips until 6 p.m. Then the wells will be removed within Panthakunj Park and at night from the Kanthalbagan slope to the Panthapath junction. The debris will be removed with a dredge.
According to stakeholders, Dhaka WASA was formed in 1983 from the Department of Public Health Engineering to separate water supply and sewerage activities. Then in 1986, by decision of the local government department, the responsibility for the drainage of rainwater was given to the Dhaka Municipal Corporation. According to Section 16 (2) (d) of the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority Act 1997, Dhaka WASA is charged with the construction and maintenance of a sewer system for drainage facilities, including drainage of rainwater. Under this program, 26 84.5 km long canals, 365 km of storm drains and 10 box culverts are preserved in the present metropolis of Dhaka for drainage of rainwater in Dhaka.
Apart from this, Dhaka South City Corporation has 950 km of sewers and Dhaka North City Corporation has 1250 km of sewers. These are also used for drainage activities. They will now be under the supervision of two corporations from the city of Dhaka.
It is worth mentioning that on December 31 last year, the two corporations of the city of Dhaka, North and South, assumed the responsibility through a memorandum of understanding with WASA.
