Notre Dame College student Jewel Khan and her family

It has been alleged that the family of a deserving student named Jewel Khan was expelled from society for defaming him for studying at Notre Dame College in Dhaka. The family has been ostracized for the past four months. No one from that family is allowed to mix with anyone in society. All members of the society are also prohibited from having a relationship with that family.

Jewel’s family also threatened to demolish their houses if they tried to associate with other members of the community. Also, on Eid-ul-Azha, the family was not allowed to participate in the social sacrifices of animals. The inhumane incident took place in the Tarafpur union’s Pathaliapara village in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail.

The police have also found evidence of the veracity of the incident. Said the Mizapur Police Officer in Charge (OC). Sayedur Rahman said that some Matabbars in the village together announced to expel Jewel’s family with Christian slander. The matter is very inhuman. The police investigation has the truth of this.

Jewel Khan is the son of Mofizul Islam from the village of Pathaliapara in Tarafpur upazila. Jewel said he passed HSC from Notre Dame College and completed his Master’s in Bengali from Dhaka University. He also participated in the written test at the 40th BCS. It was learned that both parties have presented a case at the police station and in court.

According to the details of the incident, Shariful Islam, the son of his cousin Abdur Rashid Khan, has been having a long-running dispute with the Jewel Khan family over the boundaries of the house. As a result of this dispute, on May 1, Shariful Islam’s men came to Jewels’s house with sticks and iron bars and beat the family members. The incident was led by Shariful Islam, Abdul Basheed Mia, Ramzan Ali, Abdul Latif, Tariqul Islam, and Litu Anam. Addressing Masud Jewel, son of Shamsul Haque from the same village, he said: ‘You have studied at Christian College (Notre Dame College, Dhaka). In addition, he studied Bengali at the University of Dhaka. Those who study Bengali at Notre Dame College and Dhaka University are atheists. You’re an atheist too. ‘ He threatened to take social action against the atheist at the time. They also announced the expulsion of Jewel’s family.

The allegation was also found to be true after speaking to more than one person at the scene in the town of Pathalia Para in Tarafpur on Saturday afternoon.

Mahmudul Hasan, a health worker from Tarafpur village, said that Jewel’s family does not care about anyone in society. Also, Jewel’s father speaks sarcastically about the mosque and they don’t even pay the prescribed amount of donations to the mosque. That is why the rabbis of the society said to keep them out of the society.

Abdul Based Mia, former village president of Matabbar Tarafpur Union Awami League, said: “We have become the defendants in the case as we try to resolve the dispute between the two families.”

Wahidur Rahman Ferdous, the number one member of the Tarafpur Union ward, said they have a partnership with 13 families. Some people say that they have been kept out of society because they do not pay the society’s wages (the Imam’s wage). Some people say that Jewel’s father will not be in society because he keeps Jewel’s grandmother in society. We are trying to reach a compromise with both villagers.

Mirzapur Police Inspector (investigation) said. Gias Uddin said he had heard that Jewel Khan had been slandered by some Matabbars in town for studying at Notre Dame College.

OC said. Sayedur Rahman said that there is truth in the police investigation. The police will take the necessary measures.
