North South University students have been protesting since 11 a.m. Sunday demanding a 30 percent exemption from tuition for the next semester. Students protest at gate number 6 and gate number 2 of the university, which is located in the Bashundhara residential area of the capital. The students were at the two doors of the university at the time of writing this report around 6:30 pm.
The protesters claim that North Semester cut 20 percent of tuition fees last semester in response to student demands. But university authorities have reversed this decision without any announcement in the next semester. Students have been protesting against this decision since 11 am today.
The students say their families are in financial crisis in Corona. They cannot take advantage of most of the university’s facilities to take classes online. That is why students are not willing to pay the fee for benefits that they have not received. For these reasons, they want a 30 percent tuition waiver.
However, North South University authorities sent a text message (SMS) to the students’ mobile phones this afternoon to stop the protest. In a text message, the students were asked to return. It is reported that the decision will be released on October 22.
The university administration then spoke to the protesting students. However, the agitated students continue to protest without answering that call.
In this regard, the Officer in Charge (CO) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Bhatara Police Station Moktaruzzaman told NTV Online tonight: They claim they have taken classes online. As a result, they didn’t seize any kind of opportunity. Students run off-campus programs to demand that. During the program, I went to the place and spoke with them.
OC Moktaruzzaman added: “Students do not want to pay fees for services that the university did not receive during the coronation period. Since they didn’t use the library. Apart from education, general university activities that they have been accepting for so many days, they have not accepted in the last three months. As a result, they are asking for a 30 percent fee waiver.
Asked whether the university authorities had given any guarantees to the students, the CO said: “The university authorities have spoken with them during the student movement. The authorities said that a meeting would be held on October 22 to inform the students. about the decision.
