Two defendants, Saifur Rahman (26) and Arjun Laskar (25), were taken to court from Shahparan Police Station in a police van around 11:51 am yesterday. The police presented them in the court of the Metropolitan Magistrates Court 2, Judge Saifur Rahman, around 12 noon and requested a seven-day preventive detention. The court granted preventive detention to each of the two defendants for five days. Rabiul Islam, 25, another of the defendants in the case, was brought before the same court at around 3.30 pm and the court granted him a five-day pre-trial detention.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Indictment) Amulya Kumar Chowdhury said: “The investigating officer in the case had requested the accused’s remand in custody for seven days. Subsequently, the court granted a preventive detention of five days.

No Attorney Represented Defendant: No attorney from the Sylhet District Bar represented the defendant in this sensational case. However, several attorneys participated in the hearing in cooperation with the state. ATM Fayez, President of the Sylhet District Bar Association, said: “The lawyers’ decision is personal. No attorney went to handle the case on behalf of the defendant out of self-motivation to express hatred. So far, the Sylhet District Bar has not officially made any such decisions, he said.
