Although 24 hours have passed since the incident of the gang rape in the dormitory of Murarichand College in Sylhet, the police have not been able to arrest any accused.

However, the defendants Mahfuzur Rahman Masum and Rabiul Hasan posted on Facebook claiming their innocence.

Mahfuzur Rahman Masum posted on Facebook around 9am on Saturday. There he wrote: ‘I am not involved in such heinous acts. Kill me publicly if you get proof of stake. There is faith only in God. God will absolve me. But before I am found innocent, God will judge you for leading me to suicide.

Then Rabiul Hasan posted at 10:40 in the morning. He writes, ‘With the gang rape in MC’s dorm yesterday, who or what made a lot of news online about me, I’m an MC college student, but I’ve never been to a hostel, I’m still studying from home.

He writes: ‘I urge everyone, I am not involved in this brutal gang rape, we have families. If I am involved in this heinous act, may I be publicly given exemplary punishment. I am not involved in this work in any way.

Although the police were unable to make an arrest, the Facebook post of the two defendants has been widely criticized throughout the day.

Later, like the other defendants, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum deactivated his Facebook account. However, Rabiul’s account is still active.

Asked about the progress of the arrest of the defendants at 10pm Saturday, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Jyotirmoy Sarkar told The Daily Star: “There has been no apparent progress so far An arrest operation is underway.

It can be mentioned that the defendant forcibly took a couple into the dormitory while visiting the Murarichand College campus in Tilagarh, Sylhet on Friday evening. Then they tied up the husband and raped his wife.

In this incident, the husband of the rape victim presented a case mentioning the names of six people and charging 2-3 more unidentified people.

The defendants are Saifur Rahman (28), Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony (25), Arjun Laskar (25), Mahfuzur Rahman Masum (25), Rabiul Islam (25) and Tarekul Islam (26).

Defendant Saifur Rahman’s home is in Balaganj upazila de Sylhet, Shah Mahbubur Rahman’s home is in Habiganj Sadar upazila’s Bagunipara, Arjun’s home is Zakiganj’s Atgram in Sylhet, Mahfuzur Rahman’s home is in Gachabari village by Sylhet.

Shah Mahbubur Rahman is a graduate student in Rony College’s English department and a lawful resident student from the university’s dormitory, university authorities said. The rest are Saifur Rahman, Arjun Laskar and Mahfuzur Rahman, former students of Masum College and Rabiul Islam and Tarekul Islam are outsiders.

However, former and current university students and Chhatra League leaders and activists have confirmed that they are all Chhatra League workers.
