For the first time in Pakistani history, Nisha Rao has set a record as a third-gender lawyer. Recently, Nisha, dressed in a black coat, appeared in the Karachi city court in search of her client. Through this, attorney Nisha Rao became part of history. News from The Week and Reuters
In 2009, the Supreme Court of Pakistan first identified transgender people as the third gender on the national identity card. But most of them are still sexually abused and live their lives dancing or singing at home or begging in the streets. Born into a middle-class family in Lahore, Nisha didn’t want her life to play out this way. The family kicked Nisha out of the house at the age of 17 for fear of harsh words from people in society. She then came to Karachi with two other third-sex people and took refuge with other transgender people. Many advised him to beg on the streets or engage in sex work. But he was admitted to an evening college with the money he earned by begging. After a few years of trying, he obtained a law degree.
Earlier this year, he became a member of the Karachi Bar Association and became a part of history. Nisha said she is proud to have made history. Now he has fifty cases on his hands and he also works as an NGO that works for the rights of third gender people. In Pakistan, people of the third sex were once considered “unclean”. Even in some places, this is still the case. But that is slowly changing. In 2016, the government passed a law in the country’s parliament to protect your rights.
