Within hours, two accidents occurred on the highway from the capital’s airport to Gazipur under the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. There were already complaints of slowness in the project. Now add negligence. There is no security threat in the entire project. No rescue equipment was kept in the event of an accident. Workers and engineers are working at extreme risk. Although letters were repeatedly delivered, the night work took place during the day.
The BRT project launcher crashed in front of the capital’s airport train station around 10:30 am on Sunday. At least four people, including two Chinese engineers from the project, were injured. Earlier, a dock cap collapsed near Polwell in Abdullahpur Uttara part of the same project late on Saturday night. Project authorities claimed that no one was injured in the incident.
Witnesses said the structure below the dock cap collapsed due to weakness. Many locals and security personnel said there were not enough support posts at the bottom of the dock cap to carry the load. That is why the cap breaks under the pressure of casting.
On the other hand, four people were injured when the project launcher broke down while installing beams on the track adjacent to the airport’s train station at 10:30 am on Sunday.
Shafiqul Islam, an officer at the Kurmitola Fire Service Station, said: “Four workers were injured when the launcher broke while installing a beam for the project near the airport train station. Two of them were admitted to Evercare Hospital and one to Lame Hospital.
If you want to meet the BRT project manager. Liaquat Ali said: “A wing of the project pier collapsed near Uttara Polwell in Abdullahpur on Saturday night. Something hit one of the support posts after the pitch was nearly 90 percent complete. The post was removed and the plaster collapsed. That place will be cast again.
The project authorities initially thought it was due to the weakness of the traffic system.
This part of the project was seen on site Sunday afternoon, the collapsed parts were cut and removed with a drilling machine from noon. While the rubble was being repaired, some workers were seen working on a side pillar without any safety measures.
“}”> The workers complained that the contractors did not provide them with adequate security measures. Vehicles passed as debris was cleared. The project was risky but not cordoned off.
Going to the front of the airport train station, it was seen that various parts of the launcher had broken down. Several beams were also damaged.
Abdus Sabur, who is in charge of traffic control at the project, said a letter had been issued to ensure that risky work on the project would be done at night. Even then no action was taken. Doing such work during the day is quite risky.
The Secretary of the Department of Road and Highway Transport, Nazrul Islam, visited the place around 3 in the afternoon. He did not comment on the project. As I climbed the iron stairs to see the broken part, the stairs began to move.
Syed Ali, a security guard who witnessed the accident, told the Bengali Tribune that the launcher’s iron ropes were broken because they could not carry the load. Immediately, the launcher broke down.
Shafiqul Islam, the new Managing Director (MD) of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Company Limited, said: “There is not always monitoring. We have to investigate whether there was negligence of the monitoring team in the incident. Originally, the work was supposed to be done at night. But I’m looking for why it was done during the day. ‘
Shafiqul Islam further said: ‘These beams are erected with a launcher on the quay. Previously, work was completed on Pillars 9 and 10. When launching the launcher at Piers 8 and 9, it fell around 10:30 am for some reason. Four people were injured.
