Police and firefighters have rescued a pregnant woman with a newborn under the Karatoya Bridge near the city of Panchagarh. She gave birth under the bridge this afternoon. They were rescued and taken to the hospital.

The 35-year-old woman is said to be the wife of Jamirul from the Ram Danga area of ​​Panchagarh Township.

Panchagarh Fire Service Station Officer Niranjan Sarkar told The Daily Star that a woman reportedly gave birth under the Karatoya Bridge around noon. The mother along with the newborn baby were rescued and admitted to the hospital. Another four-year-old boy who was with him has been taken into police custody.

Sirajuddaula, a resident physician at Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital, said the newborn and mother were healthy. The baby has been kept in the neonatal ward of the hospital.

The woman is known to have been living a nomadic life in Panchagarh for the past month. On Saturday afternoon, locals informed the police when they saw her giving birth wearing a hat under the Karatoya Bridge.

The mother said that her husband kicked her out of the house some time ago.

Her husband Jamirul aka Manja said that they were married a year and a half ago. The previous daughter is another husband. Six months ago, after a fight at home, she left with her daughter and never returned.

Police Superintendent Mohammad Yusuf Ali said that initially the police bore the cost of his treatment. Further action will be taken taking the situation into account.
