Dr. Lorna Brin, medical director of the emergency department at New York Presbyterian Allen Hospital in Manhattan, died of suicide on Sunday, police said.
The 49-year-old doctor was staying with his family in Charlottesville, Virginia. There he died.
His father, Dr. Philip Brin, told the New York Times: “He tried to do his job that killed him.”
He said Lerner had no history of mental illness.
According to the BBC, citing Lorna’s father, Lorna contracted the hospital coronavirus and returned to work approximately a week and a half later.
But he was sent home again from the hospital. His family took him to Charlottesville.
Lerner’s father said the last time he spoke to his daughter, he felt “cut off from everything.” Her daughter was telling her how Covid-19 patients died, even before they were removed from the ambulance.
Many patients died of the coronavirus at the 200-bed hospital in Manhattan.
“I was really at the forefront of the fight. He will surely be hailed as a hero, “Dr. Philip Brin told the Times.
In a statement, the New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital praised Dr. Lorna Brin and called him a “hero.”
In confirming his death in a press release, the Charlottesville Police Department also referred to Dr. Lorna Brin as a “hero”.
After receiving an emergency call on April 26, Dr. Lorna was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he later died, police said.
Of the 56,000 people killed at Covid-19 in the United States, 17,500 were from New York. About a third of all coronavirus infections in the United States have been identified in the state.
