Police in riot gear stormed a demonstration on Sunday, taking hundreds of protesters away in a truck. This created tension there. Later, after crossing the police barrier, they occupied the Ghaznabi road with a new procession and began to circle.

Every year on the day of Ashura in memory of Karbala, Shiite Muslims hold new processions in different parts of Dhaka. However, as public gatherings are banned this year due to the epidemic, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police asked them to observe Ashura formalities at home in accordance with hygiene and social distance without holding new processions and rallies in open spaces.

Every year the main Tazia de Ashura procession in Dhaka departs from Imambara for Hossaini Dalan in Old Dhaka. It ends in the symbolic compound of ‘Karbala’ in Dhanmondi after traveling several roads in the capital.

This time it was confined to the Imambara facilities due to epidemic restrictions, but residents of the Geneva camp in Mohammadpur did not comply with the restrictions.

Bdnews24.com senior reporter Mortuza Haider Liton said from the scene that around 2.30pm, hundreds of people from the Geneva camp tried to march west down Ghaznabi Road in a new procession. The locals got angry and began to protest.

Mrityunjay De Sajal, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mohammadpur Division, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told bdnews24.com: “The police first stopped traffic on Ghaznabi Road to control the situation. Despite the deployment of additional police officers, the situation was not under control there.

Ward Syed Hasan Noor Islam Ruston told bdnews24.com: But they didn’t listen to the request. Later, the procession was asked to confine itself to Ghaznabi Road, next to the camp. The police have also given them that permission ”.
