Valley leaders have come together to regain the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir. They have been sitting on the issue since the liberation of Mehbooba Mufti, a former prime minister of Kashmir and chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
According to the Hindustan Times, a political alliance comprising the PDP, NC and other major parties has formed. Named Popular Alliance for Confidentiality.
The meeting was held at the residence of the President of the National Conference, Farooq Abdullah. It was attended by the president of the PDP, Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the Popular Conference, Sajjad Lone, the leader of the Popular Movement, Javed Mir, and Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami of the CPM.
After a two-hour meeting, Farooq said they had decided to form an alliance called the People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration.
This alliance will try to restore the special status of Kashmir. That ended on August 5 of last year when the Modi government repealed Article 370 of the Constitution.
On August 5 last year, the central government arrested three Kashmiri politicians, including three former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers, Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, after repealing Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
Although some people, including Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, were released a few months ago, Mehbuba was under house arrest. He was later released on Tuesday night.
