Detective police arrested Nazmul Hasan Sohag, accused in a rape case brought by a student at Dhaka University (DU). Sohag, 26, a DU Islamic Studies graduate, is the joint coordinator of the Bangladesh Student Rights Council. The graduate student in his department had accused him of rape and aiding in the rape.
Sohag was arrested in the Raysaheb Bazar area in Old Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon, the investigating officer in the case, the DB inspector, said. Wahiduzzaman reported.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Konak Kumar Barua granted Sohag a three-day pretrial detention after he was sent to court on Thursday seeking a seven-day pretrial detention.
Inspector Wahiduzzaman said: “He was arrested yesterday (Wednesday). He was sent to court today for a seven-day pretrial detention. The court granted a preventive detention of three days. “
The student filed a case against Hasan Al Mamun, Coordinator of the Student Rights Council, Nazmul Hasan Sohag and Nurul Haque Nur at the Lalbagh Police Station on September 21, alleging rape and complicity.
The next day, she filed another case under the Women and Children Abuse Prevention Act and the Digital Security Act at the Kotwali police station in the capital, alleging rape and murder of characters via social media. All six were also charged in this case, but Nazmul Hasan Sohag became the main defendant.
The other three defendants in the case are the joint coordinators of the Bangladesh Student Rights Council. Saiful Islam (26), vice president of the Dhaka branch of the organization. Nazmul Huda and activist Abdullahhil Baki (23).
The student alleged that she had a “love affair” with Hassan Al Mamun, the convener of the student rights council and a student from the same department. Because of that relationship, Mamun took her home to Lalbagh on January 3 and ‘raped’ her. Then the joint coordinator of the organization Nazmul Hasan Sohag stood by her side. Nazmul Sohag also ‘raped’ Mamun on the way back to Chandpur, asking him to help him find Mamun after receiving medical treatment. Later, when he went to Noor and his other colleagues to seek redress for the incident, he first assured them that they would cooperate, but then threatened to kill them if they went too far.
The student went on a hunger strike on October 8 at the foot of the Raju sculpture as none of the defendants were arrested even 17 days after the case was closed. Then, on October 11, the two defendants in Saiful Islam and Md. Police arrested Nazmul Huda. They are now in jail after a two-day pretrial detention.
Demanding the arrest of Nur and the three other defendants within the next 72 hours, the student said she would return to the new program and demanded the arrest of the other three defendants, including Nur, within the next 72 hours. The student was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on October 19. After recovering a bit, he arrived at the foot of the Raju sculpture on Thursday afternoon and spoke with reporters.
He said that if the rest of the defendants, including Noor, are not arrested within the next 72 hours, he will go back to running a new show.
The student said: “It has been about a month and a half since my case. Not all of the defendants were arrested even after carrying out various programs. Today I called a press conference to say two things.
“I am announcing the end of my Raju sculpture program. However, if Hasan Al Mamun and the rest of the defendants are not arrested within the next 72 hours, I will go to a new show later. “
