Nasir made the proposal at a meeting of the executive committee of the city’s Awami League on Thursday. The committee members then accepted the proposal.
City leaders said the committee would send a letter to the party’s president, Sheikh Hasina, asking her to consider the proposal.
ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Chairman of the Chittagong City Committee, passed away on December 15, 2016. Then, on December 25, Party Chairperson Sheikh Hasina visited Chittagong and appointed Mahtab as Acting President.
Mahtab Chowdhury is the cousin of the late Zahur Ahmad Chowdhury, a close associate of Bangabandhu.
The Nagar Awami League committee was announced in November 2013, which has now expired.
Iftekhar Simul Chowdhury, legal secretary for the city committee, told bdnews24.com about the proposal from Thursday’s meeting. “Secretary General AJM Nasir Uddin proposed at the meeting to relieve our interim president until the next conference.
“None of those present at the meeting disagreed with the proposal. The decision was made with everyone’s consent. The Nagar Awami League will request the party chairman in a letter regarding the meeting’s decision.”
Chandan Dhar, information and research secretary for the Nagar Awami League, told bdnews24.com: “Others have supported the secretary-general’s proposal. Until the conference, he should be given the responsibility as president. “
In addition to this decision at the executive committee meeting, it was also decided to fill vacancies with capable committee members rather than dead, sick, and inactive members of the district, precinct, and unit committees.
The Nagar Awami League has 43 districts, 15 police stations, and 129 unity committees.
Chandan Dhar said that the chairman and general secretary of some of the district and thana committees had died. In that case, the First Vice President and the Principal Deputy General Secretary shall be the Acting President and the General Secretary, respectively. There are six or seven vacancies of this type.

The term of the 61-member city committee announced in November 2013 is three years under the party constitution. Four more years have passed since he assumed the mandate of the current committee.
However, it has not yet been possible to form all the commissary, district and unit committees.
When the initiative was taken to form these committees seven years ago, countercommittees also appeared in some cases.
The dispute between the late Mohiuddin and AJM Nasir was widely discussed in the Chittagong Awami League.
Before the committee’s formation in 2013, Mohiuddin’s opposition camp had several people, including current committee vice-chairs Afsarul Amin and Nurul Islam BSc, treasurer Abduch Salam.
Afsarul Amin, Khorshed Alam Sujan, Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury Babul, and Altaf Hossain Chowdhury Bachchu were the candidates for general secretaries at the time.
Nasir got the post of secretary general in senior leadership conflicts and various accounts. He was later nominated by the party for the position of mayor.
During Nasir’s tenure as mayor, former mayor Mohiuddin’s controversy over various issues was made public.
When Mohiuddin Chowdhury died on December 15, 2016, the top leaders of the city committee sat in an informal meeting at his Chashma Hill home that night.
At that meeting, they decided to allow Mahtab Chowdhury to serve as president, but Nasir’s supporters disagreed at first.
