Oliva Sharmin, Deputy District Magistrate of the Mymensingh District Jail, has been summoned by the High Court for failing to reveal information about a life sentence inmate in Mymensingh Jail and misbehaving with a state attorney. She has been asked to appear in person on October 14. She was also asked to explain why she would not be held in contempt of court.
Justice Md. Habibul Gani and Justice. Riaz Uddin Khan’s high court approved the order on Thursday. Deputy Attorney General Abdur Rafael told Kaler Kanth: “Shahid, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case, has requested bail in High Court. According to the petition, Shahed has been in prison since 1999. The petition was heard on September 29. On the same day, the court asked me to take information from the Mymensingh prison on how long the defendant has been in prison. For this reason, the jail superintendent and the deputy superintendent of the Mymensingh district jail were called in to learn this information. When Oliva Sharmin, Deputy District Magistrate, picked up the phone, she was told that the court wanted to know the date from 1999. In response, he (Deputy District Magistrate) said: “We are not obliged to comply with the court order.” The same day I informed the court about the deputy jailer’s behavior. The court asked the deputy jailer to file a contempt of court complaint against him. Later today (Thursday) we filed a contempt of court petition in Superior Court. After hearing the request, the court ordered him to appear in person on October 14 and explain the matter.
