“Mushtaq Ahmed has been detained since May 5 last year before his trial under the Digital Security Act,” they said in a statement. We have learned that his request for bail has been rejected several times and this raises concerns about his treatment in prison.
Mushtaq, a businessman by profession, was quite active writing online. Based on that, he became involved in the case of the Digital Security Law.

Cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, Didarul Bhuiyan of Rashtrachinta and former director of the Dhaka Stock Exchange Minhaj Mannan were also arrested in the same case when Mushtaq was arrested at Lalmatia’s home on May 8 last year. They were accused of “spreading anti-government propaganda and rumors.”
After the investigation, the police only charged Mushtaq, Kishore and Didar earlier this month. Although Didarul and Minhaj Mannan obtained bail, Kishore and Mushtaq’s application was rejected several times.
Mushtaq, 53, died in the Kashimpur high-security prison in Gazipur on Thursday night. Many are skeptical that authorities have not made a clear statement on how he died.
In Dhaka, in addition to protest rallies, torchlight processions and siege programs, various organizations have performed janaza in absentia. Police also beat up a torchlight procession from the Progressive Students Alliance at night.
The prison authorities have presented a case of unnatural death in connection with the death of Mushtaq; The Gazipur district administration has formed an investigation committee.
‘Controversial and vague’ from Friday’s all-day show. The repeal of the Digital Security Law was demanded. The BNPO demanded a judicial investigation.
The diplomats’ statement expressed concern about the various provisions of the law, saying that “there are great concerns about the provisions of the Digital Security Law and its implementation and its compliance with international human rights laws and standards, and we will continue to work with the government.”
The diplomats also expressed their condolences to Mushtaq’s family and friends.
