The writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who was arrested under the Digital Security Act, died in Kashimpur jail. He died at 8:20 pm on Thursday.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General. Mominur Rahman Mamun confirmed the matter to The Daily Star tonight.
He said that Mushtaq died at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical University Hospital in Gazipur.
Citing a doctor on duty at the hospital, he added that he was taken to the hospital dead. Doctors pronounced him dead around 6:20 p.m.
He said the cause of death would be known after an autopsy.
In May last year, the RAB filed a case against 11 individuals, including author Mushtaq, cartoonist Kishore, Didar, and Minhaj from Rashtrachinta, under the Digital Security Act. Between them, Kishore and Mushtaq have been in jail for the past nine months. The court granted Minhaj and Didar bail last September.
Hasnat Qayyum, a member of Rashtrachinta and a Supreme Court lawyer, told The Daily Star: “Mushtaq fell ill in Kashimpur jail tonight. Subsequently, the prison authorities took him to the hospital around 8 pm. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Quoting the deputy jailer, who did not want to be identified, he told The Daily Star: Then they called my number. By phone, the district deputy informed me of Mushtaq’s death.
Lawyer Hasnat Qayyum told The Daily Star: ‘Mushtaq came to court yesterday to appear. It was understood that his body was wrong. But he didn’t get bail.
“If Mushtaq had been granted bail yesterday, we probably would not have seen the consequences,” he said. As far as I know as a lawyer, there was no reason not to get a bond in the case against Mushtaq. But sadly, he did not get bail. It’s not a normal death, it’s murder. ‘
Lawyer Hasnat Qayyum said: ‘Now we are concerned about the teenage cartoonist. Teens have also grown weak since prison. The adolescent’s physical condition is also alarming. We are really worried about him now.
