A young cricketer named Mohammad Sajeeb Hossain committed suicide by hanging himself after not having a chance to play in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup U-19 tournament. He was a member of the U-15, 18 and 19 national teams.
Police recovered his body from his home in Durgapur upazila of Rajshahi on Sunday (15 November) at noon.
Mushfiqur Rahim, the star cricketer of the Bangladesh national team, cannot accept Sajib’s departure. However, he urged cricketers to think about their families and loved ones before doing so.
Mushfiqur posted a photo of Sajib on his official Facebook page and wrote in the caption: “We all play cricket, but remember there is life outside of cricket.” I am deeply saddened to learn of the suicide of a potentially talented cricketer in the country: Mohammad Sajib.
Regardless, I urge everyone to think about our family and loved ones before doing this kind of thing. Suicide is not the right way, God has planned everything for us and we must believe in His plan.
There were prayers for the deceased soul and his family. Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi rajiun. It’s been a while …
Recently, Sajib Bangabandhu was preparing to play in the T20 Cup. He also gave all the proofs of participation. The list of players who qualified for the Bangabandhu T20 Cup was released on November 13. He was disappointed that his name was not on the list.
Police believe the incident took place on Saturday night (November 14). His body was handed over to the family on Sunday afternoon at the end of the judicial process. Later that night, his body was buried in his own village.
Young cricketer Sajeeb Hossain’s home is in Jhaluka village of Durgapur upazila in Rajshahi. He is the son of Morshed Ali from that town. Sajib has previously played in several matches on Sri Lankan soil as a member of the U19 national team, according to his family. He scored a maximum of 95 runs in that match against India. He was the team’s leading run scorer in that game.
The BKSP campaign started earlier this year with 47 cricketers, including Sajeeb Hossain. Subsequently, from there a team of 26 people was selected and nominated for their training. Team Principal Sajjad Hossain said a final team of 15 would be formed by selecting from among 28 people. But despite his good performance, Sajib Hossain was unable to play in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup, his family said.
Sajeeb Hossain’s cousin Mofazzal Hossain told reporters that Sajib had previously played well at the national level in various countries, including Sri Lanka and India, for the U16 team. Despite good performances, many, including Sajib, stayed out of training for political reasons so as not to have a chance at the upcoming Bangabandhu Gold Cup. Because of this, Sajib was emotionally broken. But without letting anyone in the house understand him, he committed suicide by tying a rope around his neck in his room at night. The next morning, Sajib was found hanging from the house window with no response and the police were informed.
Rajshahi Durgapur Police Officer in Charge (OC) Hasmat Ali said the hanging body of cricketer Sajeeb Hossain was recovered from Jhaluka village on Saturday afternoon. At the will of the family, burial was allowed in the afternoon without autopsy. His body was buried at night. However, one case of unnatural death has been recorded in this regard, said the Durgapur police officer.
Meanwhile, Additional Police Superintendent Abul Kalam Shahid from Rajshahi Puthia Circle District Police visited the scene after receiving the news.
