The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has stepped up surveillance of hospital morgues across the country after finding evidence of ‘rape’ of dead teenagers in the morgue of the capital’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue.

The CID says it has found evidence that at least five dead teenagers were raped between March 29 of last year and August 23 of this year. These girls were between 11 and 18 years old. After the suicide, their bodies were taken to the Suhrawardy Hospital morgue for autopsy. Dom’s associate, Munna Bhakta (20), had sex with the bodies. He was detained by the CID on Thursday night. They informed the media about the incident on Friday.

Munnar’s house is in the Juran Mollah neighborhood of Rajbari in Goalanda. He is not an employee of Suhrawardy Medical College. Munna used to work there as he was Dom Jatan Kumar’s nephew from the hospital. He used to accept the bodies that arrived at the morgue. The bodies of the suicide girls were taken to the morgue from afternoon to night. So the time to cut up these corpses for examination was scheduled for the next day. The bodies were kept in the morgue at night. Munna lived there. He was also responsible for guarding the body. Munna took this opportunity to satisfy her distorted mentality.

Meanwhile, Munna made a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code on Friday night. Later he was sent to jail. Although he confessed to the unusual act in his statement, he said he did not regret the act. Munna said he used to stay alone in the morgue at night. He took advantage of the secluded setting and the opportunity to be alone. In his words, “there is nothing wrong with having sex with the dead.” However, CID officials said Munna could face life in prison for the crime.

CID’s additional DIG, Sheikh Rezaul Haider, said this is the first time such an incident has been detected in Bangladesh. A hospital morgue has been captured for the sake of technology. Many domes also work in other hospitals across the country. It cannot be said with certainty that such incidents are not occurring. Much more can be found by searching. Therefore, the surveillance of IHD has increased in other hospitals.

He said that out of more than 30,000 profiles stored in the CID forensic laboratory’s DNA database, more than 6,000 profiles have yet to be identified. Criminals like Munnar are also being investigated on these profiles. If someone is suspected of such a crime, their DNA sample will be collected and a profile created to match the saved profile. If a match is found in this case, the person in question will submit to the law.
