The Appeals Division has commuted the death sentences of three people in the murder case of Gopal Krishna Muhuri, head of Nazirhat College in Chittagong. A virtual appeals bank headed by Judge Mohammad Iman Ali approved the verdict on Tuesday.

Assistant Attorney General Amit Dasgupta represented the state in court. Helal Uddin Mollah was the defendant’s lawyer.

The three prisoners sentenced to death are Gittu Nasir, Taslim Uddin alias Montu Azam and Alamgir Kabir alias Baitta Alamgir.

Islami Chhatra Shibir cadres shot and killed Nazirhat College principal Gopal Krishna Muhuri, 60, at his home on Jamal Khan Road in Chittagong on November 17, 2001. In this case, his wife filed a case. After that, the police charged 11 people.

The trial court sentenced the cadres of Shibir Gittu Nasir, Taslim Uddin alias Montu Azam and Alamgir Kabir alias Baitta Alamgir to death and sentenced Mohiuddin alias Main Uddin, Habib Khan, Shahjahan and Chhota Saiful to life imprisonment. Although Shahjahan was acquitted in the higher court, the sentences of the others remained in force.
