The High Court ordered the wife of Deputy Shahid Islam (Papul), Selina Islam, and their daughter Wafa Islam, to surrender to the lower court before December 28 in a case alleging the illegal acquisition of assets and the smuggling of Tk 146 crore.

Justice Md. A virtual high court made up of Nazrul Islam Talukder and Judge Ahmed Sohail approved the order on Tuesday. The order was issued after hearing an appeal filed by Papul’s wife and daughter seeking an amendment to the Superior Court order. Deputy Shahid is now incarcerated in Kuwait on money and people laundering charges.

Earlier in the case, the same High Court court on December 10 had dismissed their request for early bail and ordered them to turn themselves in to the lower court within 10 days.

Attorneys Abdul Baset Majumder and Saeed Ahmed were present in court on behalf of Papul’s wife and daughter. ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan and deputy state attorney general Amin Uddin were present at the hearing.

Later, Amin Uddin told Prothom Alo that on December 10, the High Court rejected their request for early bail and ordered them to surrender to the lower court within 10 days. Then, on December 20, they filed an application with the Dhaka Metropolitan Court of Judges for Sessions. However, the lower court holidays have already started. Faced with this situation, they requested the modification of the order of the Superior Court. Following the hearing of the appeal, the High Court ordered them to surrender to the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge or the Metropolitan Recreation Judge by December 28.
