The state mourning will be held in Bangladesh on Wednesday for the death of Pranab Mukherjee, the first Bengali president of India. The Cabinet Division issued a notice in this regard on Tuesday.
A circular signed by Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam read: “The government has decided that a day of state mourning will be observed in Bangladesh on September 2 (today) for the death of former President Pranab Mukherjee, a true friend of Bangladesh.” .
On this occasion, the national flag will be flown at half mast in all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions and educational institutions in Bangladesh, including all government and non-government buildings and Bangladeshi missions abroad. In addition, special prayers will be organized in interested religious institutions.
Pranab Mukherjee, the thirteenth president of India, breathed his last at 7.15pm on Monday. He was 84 years old. He served as Finance Minister several times before becoming President in 2012. Loyal and exceptionally wise, this Bengali is respected throughout India.
In August last year, Pranab Mukherjee received India’s highest civil honor, the Bharat Ratna. He stood by the people of this country since the time of the Bangladesh Liberation War. In 2013, he received the ‘Bangladesh Liberation War Award’.
Pranab Mukherjee was also linked to Bangladesh through marriage. His wife Shuvra Mukherjee was the daughter of Narail, Bangladesh. During his visit to Bangladesh in 2013, Pranab Mukherjee, Bangladesh’s ‘son-in-law’, visited his father-in-law’s home in Bhadrabila, Narail.
