A large proportion of those who die from coronavirus symptoms in the country have not yet been tested, posing a huge health risk, experts said.
Dhaka resident Arifa Sultana’s husband contracted a high fever late last month. He also suffered from cough and shortness of breath, all of which were symptoms of Covid-19. Sultana’s husband died on May 8 after being ill for 13 consecutive days.
She does not know if her husband Kovid 19 was infected. Because despite many attempts, she was unable to control her husband’s health. Her husband was in no condition to stand in line and get tested. Again, his idea is that if there is no communication in the upper house, no one will return home and undergo a medical checkup.
“The normal fever goes away in two to three days when it’s cold. But his fever didn’t go down. He was coughing profusely. We don’t have a great bond to go home and get tested. He left after trying.” Sultana cried as she spoke.
He is currently under house arrest with his two children. After many attempts, he and his sons were allowed to analyze the samples a few days ago, but have yet to receive any results.
According to a survey by the Dhaka University Center for Genocide Studies (CGS), 929 people died of coronavirus symptoms like Sultana’s husband. Some of whom have not had their health checked.
The country’s first coronavirus patient was diagnosed on March 8. CGS director Imtiaz Ahmed said the survey was based on information published in 24 media outlets across the country from that day to May 9.
He fears that the actual number of deaths from coronavirus symptoms is much higher. According to him, anyone who comes into contact with such a patient is at risk and the spread of the virus becomes virtually impossible to control.
In this case, in addition to increasing the number of tests, there is no alternative to the quick test, he mentioned.
“As the number of tests increases, the Kovid 19 image in Bangladesh will become clearer. It is better to do 20,000 tests every day. It is necessary to check if there are any symptoms in any of them, if they are all being tested.” Then the infection can be stopped. “Imtiaz Ahmed said.
Tahmina Shirin, head of the virology department at the National Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), said the number of tests being conducted in the country is higher than before, but not in proportion to the population.
In view of the widespread prevalence of coronavirus, it is important to examine the health of people with or without symptoms, he said.
Because if the patient is infected with Kovid 19 and if he can quickly identify himself, then he can be treated in isolation. And infections can also be suppressed.
Also, if Covid 19 is found on the health screening of those who have died of symptoms, then it is urgent to find those who came in contact with them and quarantine them.
When coronavirus testing began in the country, health controls were performed on three subjects.
The first is whether the person has symptoms of coronavirus, has traveled abroad in the past two weeks, and has been in contact with someone who has traveled abroad.
But now that the coronavirus community has been transmitted in the country, it is not possible to find out who was infected, Tahmina Shirin believes that the number of tests should be increased to determine how many people have been infected.
He also said that the government needs specific guidelines on how samples are collected, how they are analyzed and how to ensure rapid test results.
The health department is working to check the health of all those who have coronavirus symptoms or those who have died from the symptoms, said Shahneela Ferdous, director of the disease control department of the health department.
He noted that the scope of health screenings would be further expanded to prevent the spread of the virus.
Shahnila Ferdous said: “We want to check the health of those who have symptoms or if someone dies with symptoms. But many families complete the burial before collecting samples. But the government wants to find out the cause of each of these deaths. We do not want any deaths. early”. “
He noted that in the beginning, there was a lack of coordination since the IEDCR did the work of collecting and analyzing the samples alone.
“IEDCR’s primary task is research. It was not an easy task for them to handle such a large amount of evidence. But much has been done since the Health Department took over.” He said.
The number of laboratories and the number of sample collection booths have been increased to increase the number of tests, he said.
According to him, sample tests are currently being carried out in 41 laboratories. In addition, 16 teams are working to collect samples from those who cannot leave for testing. BBC
