The owners of a factory in Ashulia, Savar, have fired more than 800 workers, employees and officials on the pretext that their export orders have been canceled due to coronavirus infection. Sigma Fashion Limited in the Dhanaid area of Ashulia on Saturday morning announced the layoff at the factory’s front door and posted the layoff notice for 615 workers.

The notice, signed by the General Manager of the factory, informs all Sigma Fashions Limited workers, employees and officials that all of the company’s exported products have been stopped due to the corona virus and all purchases from international buyers have been canceled. . In this context, the dismissal of the factory was announced from April 1, 2020 to May 31.

As it was not possible to fully operate the factory in this situation, the workers and employees on the notice list were dismissed on April 16 in accordance with sections 12, 16 and 20 of the Bangladesh Labor Law of 2006. Letters from Retirement will be sent to the permanent address of the dismissed workers subject to the opening of the Government Postal Department. It can be mentioned here that, subject to the normalization of Corona’s situation at present, it has been decided to pay the legal fees of the dismissed workers, employees and officials through the bank to the personal bank account number of each before 8 May 2020.

Meanwhile, the fired workers protested outside the factory after learning of the layoffs. At this time, without consulting the workers, the employer was surprised to announce the layoff, and the dismissed workers expressed anger. Workers in front of the factory complained that the sudden layoff had left thousands of workers unemployed. Also, the factory workers are behind for the past two months.

The workers said: “Currently, the situation in the country is not good and we are living with many difficulties.” I don’t know where to go or what to do with my family as they suddenly cut me off. I have been working in this factory for many years. There is no law to suddenly close a factory during a general holiday. We were not paid, nothing was said about the office. Hut posted the worker list with their names this morning.

Union leader Khairul Mamun Mintu said the workers stayed in the industrial area hoping to get a job without going home. The sudden layoffs of workers and the firing of the factory are like a fatal blow. Therefore, he immediately demanded the reinstatement of the dismissed workers along with the payment of their wages and allowances.

When contacted, Mizanur Rahman, the factory’s managing director, told reporters on his mobile phone: “Everything we have done is written in the notice.” On the other hand, some 500 Century Fashion Factory workers in the Ashgar area in Kathgarh organized a protest in front of the CNDB Ashulia Road demanding payment for their two-month delay. Additional police officers have been deployed in front of the factories to control the unpleasant situation.
