Students have erected a monument on Palashi corner in the capital in memory of Abrar Fahad Rabbi, a student at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) who was brutally murdered by BCL leaders and activists.

Bangladeshi leaders and activists Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, led by Akhtar Hossain, former Daksh secretary for social services, erected the pillar under the sign “Abaar Fahad Smriti Sangsad” at midnight on Tuesday.

Akhtar proclaims himself as the convener of the Abrar Fahad Memorial Parliament.

On the plaque of the monument is written ‘My journey in eternity, at the end of infinite space’. Abrar Fahad also used the statement on his Facebook profile.

The plaque further reads, “Eight Pillars Against Aggression.” Opposing Indian aggression, the Chhatra League was created to defend the memory and conscience of Shaheed Abrar Fahad, who was killed by terrorists.

Akhtar told the media that they have built eight pillars as symbols of sovereignty, democracy, defense of the masses, communal harmony, economic self-sufficiency, protection of indigenous industries-agriculture and river-forest-port, cultural freedom and human dignity.

“As you know, BUET Abrar student was brutally martyred by BCL terrorists on the same night today a year ago while speaking out against Indian aggression,” he said. That is why we have named this facility Eight Pillars Against Aggression.

“We believe that eight pillars will indicate eight things. If we can implement these eight themes, then we can build a Bangladesh free from aggression.

Abrar Fahad, a sophomore in BUET’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, posted a status on Facebook about the Bangladesh-India deal on October 5 last year.

Because of this, some BUET Chhatra League leaders and activists called Abrar from his room on the night of October 6. They took Abrar to room number 2011 and beat him to death. Police recovered his body from the stairs of Sher-e-Bangla Hall around 3pm.

Abrar’s father, Barkat Ullah, filed a murder case against 19 people at the Chawkbazar police station on October 8.

After a five-week investigation, the police formally charged a total of 25 people, all of them students of different years at BUET and involved with the Chhatra League.

On September 15, a trial court in Dhaka ordered the trial of the 25 defendants. The case is currently in the trial stage.

Akhter Hossain, leader of the Student Rights Council, organized a protest rally in front of eight pillars at the Palashi intersection on Wednesday afternoon, as the trial had not ended even a year after Abrar’s murder.
