The housewife was charged with rape. Later, the defendant was fined and released. Not only that, to save the husband, the woman was forced to divorce her husband. And all this happened in the presence of members of the UP and Matabbars in the rural arbitration.
The arbitration meeting was held in the Tambulpur union’s Sheikhpara village in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur on Monday evening.
According to locals, the girl was married to Samad Ali’s son, Faizar Rahman, six years ago. Her husband had been working as a bricklayer in Dhaka since the marriage. Sumon Mia, son of the late Kalam Ali from next door, had been stalking the housewife for a long time.
Seizing the opportunity Sunday night, Sumon Mia entered the housewife’s room and forcibly raped her. At that time, people arrested Sumon in handcuffs.
The next day, the local matabbars organized an arbitration in the village. An 11-member referee board was publicly formed. Former local UP member Fazlul Haque was the chairman of the board. The accused rapist was fined one lakh 10 lakhs by the arbitration board.
She was also forced to divorce the woman to save her husband and family. At the same time, her husband Faizar Rahman was fined 60,000 taka. Later in the evening all the decisions of the Arbitration Board were implemented.
Matabbar Atowar Rahman, who was present as a representative for the girl’s side at the arbitration board, said that the decisions made in the village arbitration have been accepted. Currently, the girl is in her father’s house. The defendant has been released with punishment as the girl is somewhat guilty.
Fazlul Haque, chairman of the arbitration board, said the rape incident was true. Being busy, I have given the responsibility of solving the UP member of that neighborhood.
Sadek Hossain, a UP member from the ward, said the two had reached a family decision at the arbitration meeting. And the issue of divorce has been discussed. The husband has been asked to pay Rs 60 lakhs.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of Pirgachha Police Station, Azizul Islam, said: “I am not aware of the rape.” Complaints will be acted upon.
