Tafsir, the second son of former FBCCI president Awal Mintu, studied in the UK. He is married to the daughter of Gowher Rizvi, the prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser.

Earlier, as part of the investigation into the allegations against Tafsir, the ACC investigating officer had sent a letter to the BIFIU of the Bangladesh Bank requesting some records.
The letter contained information about the accounts of Abdul Awal Mintu and his sons at the London branch of a UK bank called NFM Energy, a foreign company, and various accounts at the New York and Pittsburgh branches of two banks in the United States. . Tafsir’s brother, Tabitha Awal, is a member of BNP’s National Executive Committee. He was the mayoral candidate in the BNP-nominated Dhaka North City Corporation election. His other brother’s name is Tajwar Awal.
