Ayesha Siddique Minni, who was sentenced to death by hanging from a condom cell in Barguna prison, spoke with her father Mozammel Hossain Kishore on his mobile phone at 9 am Thursday. Confirming the matter, Mozammel Hossain Kishore said the matter must be appealed to the higher court within seven days after the verdict.
Six death row inmates in the much discussed Barguna Rifat Sharif murder case have been held in the condom cell of the Barguna District Jail. At the moment, there are no other prisoners under sentence of death in the condom cell at Barguna District Jail, except for these six inmates, said Barguna District Jail Superintendent (Jail Super) Md. Anwar Hossain.
He said Minni was the only inmate on death row in Barguna jail at the time. Five other men charged in the Rifat murder case have also been held in a condom cell. Apart from these five male inmates, there are no other male inmates in the condom cell of Barguna prison who have been sentenced to death, the prison superintendent said.
He said the special prison cell where the convicts are held is called a condom cell. Inmates in the condom cell can never leave the cell. These prisoners can visit their relatives once a month. Also once a week they can speak by phone with their relatives up to a specified time.
He said the six sentenced to death in the Rifat murder case suffered from mental disorders in the condom cell. He said that according to prison rules, the six inmates were given plates, bowls and blankets in the condom cell. The jail also issued two sets of clothing to each defendant. They will wear this dress.
When asked if there were any plans to transfer the six convicts, including Minni, to any other jail in the country, the superintendent of the jail, Anwar Hossain, said: “We will discuss the matter with the higher authorities and take action as directed “. Currently, steps are being taken to appeal these defendants to the High Court.
