A military plane crashed in Ukraine, killing at least 22 people on board. Most of the dead were cadets in training at Kharkiv Air Force University. Also, there are some air force pilots.
The BBC reports that two people were rescued from the crashed plane on Friday night. Also, three runners are still missing. Rescue teams are working to find them. Authorities say Antonov 28 had a total of 26 passengers. The training plane caught fire while landing at a military airport in the eastern city of Kharkiv. So far, authorities have not given any reason for the accident.
The country’s air force Antonov 26 transport plane is known to have crashed two kilometers from the Chuhuiv military airfield at 8:50 p.m. Ukraine local time (11:50 p.m. Bangladesh time on Friday). It immediately caught fire. Rescuers managed to put out the fire in an hour-long effort.
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has confirmed the news of a military plane crash. “I am shocked by the whole incident,” Anton Zerashenko, Ukraine’s deputy interior minister, told AFP. So far 22 deaths have been reported. Other than this, the two cannot be found. A search operation is in progress to find them. It is unknown at this time what caused the accident.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed deep regret over the crash of a military plane. He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He wished the injured a speedy recovery. In a Facebook post, Volodymyr Zelensky said he would visit the area where the plane crashed on Saturday.
The Ukrainian president has also announced the formation of a commission of inquiry into the cause of the accident. He said the commission would study the circumstances under which the plane crashed.
