Merchant killed in attack by UP member protesting corruption

Witnesses said that on November 10, Abdul Jalil, a member of UP, was sitting in the tent of Sujan Miah, a resident of the area. Sujan protested against Jalil’s behavior towards a disabled person. Khalil was furious at this. He attacked Sujan along with his brother and relatives. While trying to save Sujan, his mother Farida Yasmin, his younger brother, Sumon Mia village police, Sumon’s wife Urmi Begum, younger brother Raju Mia and several others were injured. Sujan’s store was also vandalized. Sujan, who was seriously injured, was rescued and taken to the Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex. From there he was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. That night Sujan was admitted to a hospital in the capital.

On November 14, Sujan’s younger brother, Sumon Mia, filed a lawsuit against five people, including UP member Abdul Jalil. Sujan returned home last Thursday after treatment. When his condition deteriorated the next day, he was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. He died Saturday night while receiving treatment there.

Sujan’s attempted murder case has now turned into a murder case. Family members, including members of the UP, have fled since the case. Sujan’s younger brother Sumon said: ‘My brother lost his life protesting injustice. We demand the immediate arrest of the guilty and due justice.

When asked, the Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Nalitabari Police Station, Bachir Ahmed, told Prothom Alo that three people arrested in the case are in jail. The police continue their operation to arrest the accused UP members and others.
