University student Meherin Sultana was recognized as his wife on the second fast day at her husband’s home in Bhangura, Pabna. Relatives, including her husband Khairul Islam and father-in-law Akbar Ali, accepted Mehreen as their daughter-in-law through mediation by the Bhangura police on Wednesday night. In the early afternoon, Meherin filed a written complaint against her husband Khairul Islam and her father-in-law under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act.
It is known that while studying in the second year of HSC at Bhangura Haji Jamal Uddin Degree College, Mehreen Sultana, daughter of Rabiul Islam from Naubaria village in Sadar’s union of the Upazila, fell in love with Akbar Ali’s son Khairul Islam , from the village of Diarpara in the Mandtosh Union of the Upazila in November last year. At one point, Mehreen got pregnant in March of this year to establish a physical relationship with each other. But to cover up the matter, Mehreen ruined the fetus with Khairul Islam’s promise of marriage. Later, the couple were married on April 5 in a Pabna court through a notary public and on the same day with a Kazi office in Denmohar for Tk 6 lakh. But both kept the matter a secret from the family.
Shortly after the marriage, Mehreen continued to pressure Khairul to go to his father-in-law’s house. In this situation, Khairul has been avoiding Mehreen for the past month and a half. Helpless, Mehreen went to Khairul’s home Tuesday afternoon and demanded of his wife. Khairul fled the house at that time and other family members beat Mehreen and tried to get her out of the house. However, Mehreen endured the torture and stayed at her husband’s home and went on a hunger strike.
Meanwhile, after the Mehreen hunger strike, the Bhangura police, Upazila Women’s Affairs Officer Hasnat Jahan Shikha, and Upazila Women’s Vice President Azida Parveen Pakhi tried unsuccessfully to resolve the problem socially. Later, Mehreen filed a complaint with the Bhangura Police Station under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act. The police took Mehreen’s husband, Khairul Islam, and father-in-law Akbar Ali, to the police station at night. Later, after an arbitration meeting mediated by the police administration, they recognized Mehreen and took him home with dignity.
“I am happy to be a wife,” Mehreen said. Now I want to spend my days happily in peace with my husband and my family.
Bhangura SI Modacher Hossain police said they initially tried to solve the problem socially. But if not, the housewife filed a written complaint with the Bhangura Police Station. The matter was resolved by holding an arbitration meeting with the people of both families. Now both family members are happy with the decision of the arbitration meeting.
