Meeting on India's ban on vaccine exports

Dhaka: The Health Ministry has held a meeting on what to do after the decision was made to ban the export of vaccines to the Serum Institute, an Oxford-based corona vaccine manufacturer in India.

The Health Ministry will hold a meeting on Monday (January 4) to discuss the progress of the vaccine amid concerns about the availability of the vaccine after India’s ban.

The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of Health, Abdul Mannan.

The Minister of Health appeared at the ministry’s secretariat around 12:15 pm. He will speak to reporters about the vaccine, officials from his office said.

Due to India’s sanctions, other countries that have signed agreements with the country may have to wait a few more months to receive the vaccine.

India approved on Friday (January 1) the emergency application of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

However, Adar Punawalla, executive director of the Serum Institute, said the Serum Institute could not export to guarantee a dose for Indians at risk.

He added that Serum would not be able to sell the vaccine in the private market at the moment. They can only deliver the vaccine to the Indian government at the moment.

After this decision by India, questions have been raised about corona vaccination in Bangladesh. Although the Ministry of Health recently signed an agreement with the Serum Institute of the country. According to him, Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited will supply 30 million doses of Serum vaccine in Bangladesh in phases.
