The administration has issued section 144 at seven locations north of Matlab in Chandpur. The decision was made by the local administration amid fears of clashes when former Awami League leader minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and incumbent deputy Nurul Amin Ruhul announced political programs in the same area. The areas are: Matlab Uttar Upazila, Srirayarchar, Mohanpur, Fatehpur, Eklashpur, Dashani, Amirabad, South Bridge Matlab Uttarpar.
The police superintendent said: ‘Separate political programs have been announced in the same place. We have decided to issue section 144 in the area after discussion with the district administration as there is a risk that the law and order situation will deteriorate.
He said the area was being bugged at night. Section 144 will be effective at seven points as of Thursday morning. At the moment, it will remain in force in that area for three days. Steps will be taken to understand the situation later.
According to local sources, the Matlab Uttar Upazila Awami League called a protest rally on January 20 to protest the vandalism and anarchy of the sculpture of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
