Obaidul Quader, the party’s general secretary, announced the party’s nomination in the Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 constituencies at a press conference at his official residence on Monday.
He said the candidates for the two by-elections were finalized at a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Nominating Board in Ganobhaban on August 30, chaired by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“Monirul Islam Manu in the Dhaka-5 constituency and Mohammad Anwar Hossain Helal in the Naogaon-6 constituency have been nominated by the party. I urge everyone to unite and work for the party’s candidate.”
Kazi Monirul Islam Manu is the president of the Thana Awami Jatrabari League in the capital. While studying at then Jagannath College in the late 1960s, he became involved in BCL politics.
And Anwar Hossain Helal is the president of Raninagar Upazila Parishad of Naogaon and vice president of the Upazila Awami League.
Habibur Rahman Mollah, a longtime Member of Parliament in Dhaka-5, died on May 8.
Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 by-elections on October 18, vote at EVM
South City Corporation districts 47, 49 and 50 and the constituencies comprising the Demra, Donia, Matuail and Sarulia unions had 19 candidates collecting nomination forms for the Awami League.
The Naogaon-6 (Atrai-Raninagar) seat became vacant on July 28 after the death of Deputy Israfil Alam. In this electoral district 33 people collected nomination forms.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the by-elections of the Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 constituencies will be held on October 18 at EVM.
Interested candidates can send the nomination documents to the Return Officer until September 18. After the selection on September 20, the candidacy can be withdrawn until September 28.
